Binocular purchase

I started doing my research into the next telescope I should purchase.  I currently have the Meade ETX90 but wanted to get something bigger.  But, my initial research said that binoculars were actually a good first step.

Orion Telescopes have a great set of videos.  I watched their Getting Started video first which lead into the How to Choose a Binocular video.

The video pointed to a 10×50 binocular has a good option for astronomy.

Meade tripod

For my Meade ETX90, I originally purchased the tabletop tripod legs.  As I was thinking about getting into astronomy as a serious hobby, I was thinking that a full tripod would be nice addition to my equipment.  This was a situation were eBay is so helpful.  I was able to find the Deluxe Field Tripod that was reasonably priced and won an auction.

The tripod was a great addition.  The tripod has a tilt-plate which allows for a equatorial mounting.

Bad Astronomy book review

I can’t remember exactly were I heard about this book.  The book is Bad Astronomy by Philip Plait. Phil has a blog also called Bad Astronomy.  The book discussed two topics which I was interested in.  First was it explained many astronomical topics in detail to give the real science like why the sky is blue and how tides are created.  The second topic was about debunking bad astronomy like the moon landings and UFOs.  The book is an excellent read full of wit and technical understanding.  It might be a little heavy on the technical end but it is accurate.  I need to read it again to really let the concepts sink in so I can explain them to other.

I highly recommend this book.
